Rethinking Data Management for Storage-centric Sensor Networks

چکیده
Data management in wireless sensor networks has been an area of significant research in recent years. Many existing sensor data management systems view sensor data as a continuous stream that is sensed, filtered, processed, and aggregated as it “flows” from sensors to users. We argue that technology trends in flash memories and embedded platforms call for re-thinking this architecture. We articulate a vision of a storage-centric sensor network where sensor nodes will be equipped with high-capacity and energy-efficient local flash storage. We argue that the data management infrastructure will need substantial redesign to fully exploit the presence of local storage and processing capability in order to reduce expensive communication. We then describe how StonesDB enables this vision through a number of innovative features including energyefficient use of flash memory, multi-resolution storage and aging, query processing, and intelligent caching.

Wireless sensor networks will be used in a wide range of challenging applications where numerous sensor nodes are linked to monitor and report distributed event occurrences. In contrast to traditional communication networks, the single major resource constraint in sensor networks is power, due to the limited battery life of sensor devices. It has been shown that data-centric methodologies can b...

Wireless sensor networks are data centric because in many applications, sensor nodes are required to generate data, collect data, storage data and process data queries. Meanwhile, wireless sensor networks are vulnerable to security attacks because they are deployed in unattended (often hostile) environments and do not have tamper resistant hardware. Therefore, secure and efficient data manageme...

Flash memory has become a more widespread storage medium for modern wireless devices because of its effective characteristics like non-volatility, small size, light weight, fast access speed, shock resistance, high reliability and low power consumption. Sensor nodes are highly resource constrained in terms of limited processing speed, runtime memory, persistent storage, communication bandwidth ...
متن کاملPractical Data-Centric Storage
Most data retrieval mechanisms in wireless sensor networks adopt a data-centric approach, in which data is identified directly by name rather than through the location of the node on which it is stored. Initial data-centric methods, such as directed diffusion and TinyDB/TAG, focused on the conveyance of data. One of the advantages of these algorithms is that they do not require pointto-point ro...

Improved energy-efficiency and storage capacity of new-generation NAND flash memory makes a compelling case for storage-centric sensor networks. Such a storage-centric sensor network emphasizes the use of platforms with larger storage and more extensive use of the storage capacities on sensors. We demonstrate the feasibility of storage-centric sensor networks using an instance of a storage-cent...
